MISSION  STATEMENT

We, at Totternhoe Lower and Pre-School, strive for excellence in education by providing a safe, secure, caring family environment, where all are valued and respected as individuals, enabling them to reach their full potential, whilst growing in their love and understanding of the Christian Faith.

Totternhoe Lower School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of our children and young people and expects all staff, volunteers and visitors to the school to share this commitment

Rational

Totternhoe Lower School (TLS) pupils wear their uniform with pride. Our uniform shows that we are part of the TLS and Diocese of St Albans communities. We have the highest expectations from our pupils with regards to school uniform and appearance, and strongly believe that our high standards promote positive behaviour, support effective teaching and learning and contribute to the ethos of the school. When you decide to join TLS you are agreeing to follow the policies the school sets. This includes the school uniform and appearance policy.

We have school uniform and we encourage all our children to wear their uniform smartly. All items of uniform must be labelled.

It consists of the following:

Pre School

• White polo shirt or shirt
• School blue sweatshirt jumper/cardigan *
• School book bag *

Optional

• Charcoal trousers (shorts may be worn in warmer weather)
• Charcoal skirt/ pinafore (blue & white checked dress for warmer weather)
• Black/white socks
• Sensible black leather school shoes. Not shoes with heels or trainers (Boot may be worn in winter – no heel)

Only pre school children have the option to wear non school uniform skirts or trousers.

Year R and Key Stage 1

• White polo shirt or shirt
• School blue knitted jumper/cardigan/slipover *
• Charcoal trousers (shorts may be worn)
• Charcoal skirt/ pinafore (blue & white checked dress for summer uniform only)
• black/white socks
• Sensible black leather school shoes. Not shoes with heels or trainers (Boot may be worn in winter – no heel)
• Indoor plain black plimsolls

(Children in Year R and Year 1 should bring a labelled pair of Wellingtons in their first week that can be left in school for outdoor play).

 Key Stage 2

• White shirt
• School tie *
• School blue knitted jumper/cardigan  *
• Charcoal trousers (shorts may be worn)
• Charcoal skirt/ pinafore (blue & white checked dress for summer uniform only)
• black/white socks
• Sensible black leather school shoes. Not shoes with heels or trainers (Boot may be worn in winter – no heel)
• Indoor plain black plimsolls

PE KIT

We require that our pupils change for PE activities (pre school exempt). They need an appropriately labelled PE kit consisting of the following:

• Trainers
• White socks
• House coloured T shirt *
• Navy blue shorts **
• Navy blue tracksuit for outdoor games in cold weather and fixtures **

PE kit should be brought to school on the first day of term and taken home on the last day of the term. This will allow flexibility for their class teacher.

If a child does not have their PE kit a letter will be sent home.

Other compulsory   items:

·          School Book Bag *

·          Named water bottle

·          Snack pot (For fresh fruit or vegetable ONLY)

·          PE bag **

·          A weather appropriate coat with a hood. (We do go out to play in all weathers including cold weather and light rain)

General notes on appearance:

·          Shirts should be tucked in at all times

·          When you wear your school uniform (no matter where you are) you are representing the entire school. Wear it with pride.

Jewellery:

• Jewellery should not be worn or brought into school.
• ONE pair of discreet studs may be worn. These MUST be removed at home on PE days.
• No other body piercings are allowed.

Hairstyles:

• Hair should be one natural colour, NO hair dye.
• Long hair MUST be tied back.
• Hair should be no shorter than Grade 2.
• Tramlines, patterns and sculpting are not allowed.
• Hair bands and fastenings should be in school colours and should not be overly large.

Students must NOT wear:

• Hoodies, sportswear or sweatshirts.
• Leather or denim clothing.
• Trainers are NOT allowed to be worn at any time other than for PE lessons and clubs.
• Make up and nail varnish should NOT be worn to school.

Non-compliance with the uniform and appearance policy:

Parents of students who do not wear the correct uniform will be contacted and requested to bring in a change of clothes for their child.

Students who wear make-up/nail varnish or jewellery will be required to remove these. Items of jewellery will be confiscated by the teacher to be collected by the parent.

Persistent and defiant non-compliance with the policy will result in an appropriate sanction which may include reflection or exclusion. See behaviour for learning policy.
