School Uniform Policy, September 2024
Introduction
It is our policy that all children wear school uniform when attending school, or when participating in school-organised events outside normal school hours. We ask children to wear their shirts tucked into their skirts or trousers and to take pride in their personal appearance. The main items of clothing can be bought from our online provider Mapac. Whilst others are easily available, at very competitive prices, at local shops including supermarkets. A complete list of the items needed for school uniform, including those for Physical Education, can be found below.
Aims and objectives
Our policy supports our school ethos and commitment to inclusion in the following ways:
· promotes a sense of pride in our school;
· helps to create a sense of community and belonging towards the school;
· identifies the children with the school;
· prevents children from wearing ‘fashion clothes’ that could be distracting in class;
· is practical, smart and designed with health and safety in mind;
· is considered good value for money by most parents.
School Uniform List
Our school uniform colour is a combination of royal blue and grey. Items marked with a * need to be bought from our online provider Mapcac. The link to our online uniform shop is https://www.mapac.com/education/parents/uniform/stnicholascofesp40lb . We have reduced the number of branded items as well as the costs of items in the hope that all parents will buy the branded garments. They are very good quality and should last well.

Jewellery and Watches
For health and safety reasons we do not allow children to wear jewellery to school.
The exceptions to this rule are:
· small objects of religious significance.
· Wristwatches may be worn but only for the purpose of telling the time. ‘Smart’ watches linked to mobile phones are not permitted.
Children are required to remove these items during PE lessons to prevent them from causing injury.
We do appreciate when ears are first pierced there is a requirement that they are not removed. If this period takes place during term time would you please ensure your childs ear-rings are covered with micropore tape. Once they can safely be removed they should no longer be worn to school.
Please note School cannot be held responsible for any loss or breakage of the above items in school.
Hair Ornaments
All children whose hair is long enough to be tied up should be to prevent the spread of headlice; to ensure that they can see their learning clearly and to participate safely in all lessons.
Hair bands, ribbons/bows or ‘scrunchies’ should be plain or gingham and either blue, navy or white in colour. Hair bands should not have large flowers or other embellishments attached.
Make up, Nail varnish and temporary tattoos
Make up, nail varnish and temporary tattoos should not be worn to school unless for an out of school hours function, for example a school disco.
Extreme hairstyles are not appropriate for school. The use of styling products should be kept to a minimum and children should not have decorative patterns or ‘tram lines’ cut into their hair or have their hair coloured or dyed.
For health and safety reasons we do not allow children to wear shoes with platform soles or high heels. Shoes should be flat, black and appropriate for school. If trainers are worn as every day footwear these should be black, plain and without logos. Your child should wear shoes which he or she can manage to do up independently. Please do not send your child to school in shoes which prevent them from running in the playground. If boots are worn these also should be plain black.
The Role of Parents
We believe that one of the responsibilities of parents is to ensure that their child has the correct uniform and PE kit, and that it is clean, in good repair and that the child’s name is written on all items. If a parent has difficulties for any reason with fulfilling this request they are asked to speak confidentially to a senior member of staff to discuss the issues. Parents should be assured that we will do all we can to help. Children who arrive at school wearing non-school uniform clothing will be loaned an appropriate item to wear for that day. The same system will apply for children who do not have a PE kit. If we do not have sufficient spare items children will be asked to take part in their PE lesson in their school uniform, where appropriate. If it is not possible for a child to take part in their lessons as they do not have the appropriate uniform then they will be sent to an alternative class. The class teacher will communicate with parents should this happen on a regular basis. If there are serious reasons, for example for religious or medical reasons, why parents want their child to wear clothes that differ from the school uniform, the school will consider such requests sympathetically. If any parent would like to request a modification to the uniform policy on this basis, they should contact the Headteacher.
